He went down on 6/26/44 . they lost an engine on way into ploesti . Bombed target ,lose another engine , but still flying . finally lost 3rd engine . All lost to mechanical problems . Bailed out over Albania and became POW. went to Frankfort via train . Bombed by brits going through Berlin. Bomed in Berlin again while going to pow camp .

He was my uncle and fishing partner . They ran out of 3 engines . He was a tail gunner . He was last to bail out from Bomb bay after booting photographer on his first flight . They were over Albania . All crew became pow except co-pilot who escaped . He was in a pow camp in what is now Poland . He was forced to march west till wars end. . He remained in usaf for 25 yrs . In koryea, he was a gunner in b-29. He was later a boom operator on kc-97. He finished as flight engineer on c-124.

Thanks for your submission. I have a few questions...what was his position in plane? What was the name of the POW Camp? If you have it. Do you have the names of any other crew members ?
Did he remain in service after the war ? Age ?
Do you have any photos of him ?
I know lots of questions but I find this very interesting. My father James O Umphries is listed.
